Keynote: Bouncing back! Resilience and survival as an educator by Jo HartAll the time I see Educators struggling to survive! Some of us do and some of us don’t. We stop teaching – change careers opt out completely OR we just hang in there! Why, and why, and what can we do to help us survive?
Bio
Originally from the UK now living in rural Western Australia. I have a background in science, equine studies and in transferrable/employability skills. This experience has been invaluable for my substantive position (since 2007) as an LLN/Foundation Skills lecturer at CY O’Connor Institute – a regional Public VET provider in rural Western Australia. I use technology as a major part of my toolkit for teaching adult literacy/numeracy both face-to-face and online. Our huge catchment area combined with the diversity and range of literacy levels of my learners makes e-solutions almost essential for me. In 2013 I was a Finalist in the Australian Training Awards. I was also seconded to our state Training Dept working in e-learning development and adult literacy curriculum. I have professional development roles in literacy/numeracy and e-learning/edtech use in CY O’Connor, more broadly in WA; and nationally through the National Foundation Skills Strategy Project. I provide formal PD in e-learning development/delivery using virtual classroom (BbC), LMS, Blogs and a range of other Web2.0 tools. I also support/mentor colleagues in developing their blended e-learning strategies, provide feedback on practicalities and help with pedagogic and technical issues. I co-facilitate the WA Adult Literacy and Numeracy Network operating mainly online. As a Foundation Skills "Champion" for WA I am currently facilitating the use of social media to extend the Foundation Skills Practitioners Community of Practice nationally beyond the core Champions group. I have won funding for and managed/facilitated federal and state funded e-learning projects. I also facilitate internal e-learning projects, currently working with subject specialists to develop interactive e-learning content for use in blended learning solutions that utilise virtual classroom, LMS, Web2.0 tools, and social media blends for our geographically isolated students.
